We demonstrate a new microfluidic fuel cell design with high-surface area porous carbon electrodes and high aspect ratio channel, using soluble vanadium redox species as fuel and oxidant. The device exhibits a peak power density of 70 mW cm(-2) at room temperature. In addition, low flow rate operation is demonstrated and single pass fuel utilization levels up to 55% are achieved. The proposed design facilitates cost-effective and rapid fabrication, and would be applicable to most microfluidic fuel cell architectures. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
