The use of ferrocene-1,1'-dicarboxylic acid (fdcH(2)) in Mn cluster chemistry has led to a family of ferrocene-rich Mn-7, Mn-8 and Mn-13 clusters. The complexes are all mixed-valence. Solid-state DC and AC magnetic susceptibility studies have established the Mn-7, Mn-8 and Mn-13 complexes to possess S = 2, 5 and 9/2 ground states, respectively. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
