Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) adsorbed on the surface of TiO2 nanofibers coated with Ag nanoparticles was obtained. Several bands in the SERS spectra obtained are different from 4-Mpy adsorbed on the surface of Ag nanoparticles. This result indicates that the abrupt change of the band may come from 4-MPy/TiO2. For SERS-active substrates of TiO2 nanofibers coated with Ag nanoparticles, Ag nanoparticles would excite localized surface plasmon resonance under the irradiation of a suitable laser. This further enhances the SERS signals of 4-MPy adsorbed on the TiO2 fibers through the long-range electromagnetic enhancement. The novel substrate produced a high enhancement factor (EF) near 4-Mpy adsorbed on Ag nanoparticles that must provide an enhancement by a factor of 6.7 x 10(5), and the EF of 4-Mpy adsorbed on TiO2 nanofibers through the long-range electromagnetic enhancement of Ag nanoparticles must be at least 4.9 x 10(5).
