In this paper, loop antenna is investigated for high frequency (HF) radio frequency identification (RFID) smart table application. The antenna is optimized by making a compromise between the coverage and detection range. The performance test shows that the antenna is capable of detecting 90 plastic plates in cr specific area (500 X 500 mm(2)) and achieving a detection rate of 100% when it was installed below a wood/plastic table. The proposed antenna has been successfully implemented in an HF RFID smart table prototype for a restaurant to count food plates and bill customers automatically. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
