Two new quinone type compounds, variecolorquinones A (1) and B (2) together with eleven known related compounds 3 similar to 13 have been isolated from the metabolites produced by the halotolerant fungal strain Aspergillus variecolor B-17. The structures of I and 2 were determined by spectroscopic methods. I exhibited selective cytotoxicity against A-549 cells with the IC50 values of 3.0 mu M. 2 showed cytotoxicity against HL60 and P388 cells with the IC50 values of 1.3 and 3.7 mu M, respectively.
