Rock-inhabiting cyanoprokaryota from South Bohemia (Czech Republic)

Rock-inhabiting cyanobacteria play an important role in terrestrial ecosystems. They colonize new ecological niches together with lichens and green algae, and they are an important factor in weathering. In contrast to their high significance, there is a low level of knowledge about these organisms. This article summarizes the results of a pilot study of the rock-inhabiting cyanobacterial flora of the South Bohemian region. Eleven substrates in 30 sites were sampled; 35 cyanobacterial morphospecies were found; four of which were new to the flora of the Czech Republic.
