Novel mesoporous reactive sorbent based on nanosheets and nanotubes of manganese oxide was prepared by the flocculation precipitation of manganese oxide nanosheet solutions. Obtained porous aggregates were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive analysis of X-rays, N-2-BET and thermogravimetry techniques. The data revealed the formation of aggregates composed of nanotubes and nanosheets of MnO2 with the 0.73 nm of separation of their tube walls or sheet layers. Obtained material was tested as a reactive sorbent for the decontamination of chemical warfare agent. Reaction was monitored by GC-FID technique and the reaction products were characterized by GC-MS. Data explored the role of hydrolysis reactions in the decontamination of 2-chloro-ethyl ethyl sulphide. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
