An increased risk for stillbirth has been a recognized potential complication of diabetes for over 100 years. This increased risk is most commonly associated with insulin-requiring pregestational diabetes, but may also be evident in other forms of diabetes complicating pregnancy. This article focuses on the association of stillbirth with diabetes, the potential pathophysiology of stillbirth in pregnancies complicated by diabetes, and strategies to reduce the risk of stillbirth in women who have diabetes.
