The banding in a friction stir weld was determined to correspond to a periodic textural variation between the B root B component and a mixture of B root B and C components of the simple shear texture. These textures have similar deformation reference frames, indicating that the banding arises from a periodic variation in the strain magnitude or temperature during welding.
