Peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPARs) regulate expression of key genes controlling lipid and glucose metabolism through their role as ligand activated transcription factors. As PPARs play major roles in the regulation of lipid metabolism, glucose homeostasis, and inflammatory processes, they are ideal targets for therapeutic management strategies for cardiovascular disease. This article discusses the role of PPARs in the treatment of cardiometabolic abnormalities involved in cardiovascular risk. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
