Rhodium-catalyzed C-H activation and cyclization of 1-naphthols and other related compounds with cyclic 2-diazo-1,3-dione compounds leading to naphtho[1,8-bc]pyran derivatives and its analogues have been developed. Most of the corresponding products were obtained in good to excellent yields. It offers an alternative approach for the synthesis of useful diverse naphtho[1,8-bc]pyran derivatives.
