A straightforward synthesis of optically active trifluoromethyl dihydropyranones and spirocyclic oxindole-dihydropyranones has been realized by the chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes-catalyzed cyclization of alpha,beta-unsaturated beta-methylacyl chlorides with activated trifluoromethyl ketones or isatin derivatives.
