A novel cascade Friedel-Crafts alkylation/Michael addition/aromatization reaction of 2-vinylindoles with alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes has been developed for the construction of functionalized tetrahydrocarbazoles. The products were obtained in up to 97% yield and with excellent stereoselectivities (ee up to >99%, dr up to >99:1).
