Molecular-scale control of unbound and bound states of C-60 molecules is achieved at room temperature. Using this method, single-molecule-level writing, erasing, and rewriting bits are demonstrated: A single surface C-60 molecule represents 1 or 0 of binary data depending on whether the C-60 molecule is depressed due to dimerization or trimerization with an underlying C-60 molecule or not.
