Polymer-inorganic nanocomposite microspheres synthesized by a simple solid-in-oil-in-water emulsion technique can provide both sustained protein release with tunable gradient, and delayed protein release with tunable lag time. Microspheres with a tunable lag time between 2 and 6 weeks (see figure) can be used as delayed release vehicles for the sequential delivery of multiple proteins.
