An interesting paper in this issue describes an experiment that is an optical analogue of the quantum corral on metal surfaces constructed and observed using scanning tunneling microscopy more than a decade ago. In this Perspective, the mechanism underlying the confinement and manipulation of light in metallic nanorings and related structures are discussed, with an emphasis on recent results.
