We constructed a gamma-ray detector using 900 L of liquid xenon to identify a 52.8-MeV gamma ray from the lepton-flavor violating muon decay, mu -> e gamma. The detector uses only scintillation light originating from liquid xenon to reconstruct the gamma-ray energy, interaction position, and arrival time. A new photomultiplier that can be operated in liquid xenon has been newly developed for this detector. Details of the detector is described in this paper along with the present performance of the detector.
