In this paper, an optimal nonlinear controller based on model predictive control (MPC) for a flywheel energy storage system is proposed in which the constraints on the system states and actuators are taken into account. In order to control the system in the presence of modeling uncertainties and under the influence of external disturbances, tube-based MPC is utilized as a robust controller. Simulation results demonstrate the merits of the proposed method in controlling the dc link voltage and the fly wheel speed.
