Here, we report the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of the daimyo oak, Quercus dentata Thunb. The genome is 161,250 bp in size with a GC content of 36.83% and contains 134 genes (86 protein-coding genes, 40 tRNA genes, eight rRNA genes). The large single-copy region and small single-copy region in the cp genome contain 90,560 bp and 19,036 bp, respectively, while the inverted repeat region is 25,827 bp in length. The phylogenetic analyses based on the whole cp genome sequence provided a solid evidence that Q. dentata has a close relationship with Q. aliena. The presence of two subgenus, Quercus and Cyclobalanopsis, in Quercus was uncovered in the phylogenetic analyses. The cp genome presented here will provide useful information for the phylogenetic and evolutionary studies of Quercus species.
