This study described a one-step solution synthetic route to core/shell structured C/MoO2 spheres. Carbon spheres were first generated via hydrothermal carbonization of ascorbic acid. Abundant functional groups on the carbon sphere surfaces served as the anchor sites for MoO2 that MoO2 nanoparticles can grow and coalesce on the surfaces of carbon cores to form core/shell structures. The application of C/MoO2 core/shell spheres as supercapacitor electrode materials was studied in three-electrode half-cells, which gave a specific capacitance of 132 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1).
