The metabolic profile of essential oils and assessment of anti-urease activity by ESI-mass spectrometry of Salvia officinalis L.

For decades, the therapeutic benefits of medicinal plants and their biologically active constituents have been well documented. In this study, the metabolic profile of Egyptian Salvia officinalis essential oils using Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), total phenolic content (TPC) and anti-enzymatic properties of aqueous extract of S. officinalis (AESO) against jack bean urease (JBU) by an Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) were investigated. The results revealed that the primary metabolites detected in Salvia essential oils were 1,8-cineole (15.4%), oxygenated sesquiterpene viridiflorol (7.1%), nonacosane (3.1%), camphor (3.0%), and pentacosane (2.4%). The TPC content was determined to be 37.1 mg GAE/g dry plant material, while AESO exerted for the first time, anti-JBU with an IC50 value of 1.65 mg/mL. This study presents phenolic-rich AESO as a promising curative agent in the development of urease inhibitors useful to treat diseases induced by urease-producing pathogens. (c) 2018 SAAB.
