Carbaryl is the most frequently used carbamate pesticide in the agriculture field, which is associated with a series of potential adverse health impacts including neurological disorder and cancer. 1-naphthol (1-N), a metabolite of the insecticide carbaryl, is an established human biomarker used for assessing food intake and environmental exposure. The present study, amied to investigate the potential application of Eu3+ functionalized metal-organic frameworks for the effective detection of the 1-N in human urine. We have synthesized and characterized a hybrid material through doping europium ions into 2,2'-bipyridine-based microporous MOF (MOF-253) using a post-synthesis modification strategy. The study shows a highly efficient recyclable luminescent probe Eu3+@MOF-253 for the detection of biomarker 1-N of exposure carbaryl with excellent sensitivity and rapid response time. Taken together, a low-cost homemade indicator box for the convenient detection of 1-N has been designed, which is recyclable and field portable and is an excellent candidate for potential application in personalized health monitoring.
