Image segmentation is a method to extract the region of interest from the image. The edges or regions obtained depend on heterogeneity or homogeneity properties of the pixels. This paper presents a survey of various edge detection and threshold based segmentation methods for different types of monochrome images. The segmentation algorithms are compared and implemented in MATLAB. It has been inferred from the results that the required segment can be obtained based on proper mask and threshold values.
