This paper introduces a sliding mode controller based on neural networks, for a class of single-input singleoutput (SISO) nonlinear discrete-time systems with unknown dynamics. The system is supposed to be represented by an input-output model implemented with layered neural networks. It is proposed a design procedure which is extended to tracking problems. It is also shown the application of this procedure to one simulated example and compared with the result from a classical controller.
