Culture, social class, and independence-interdependence: The case of Chinese adolescents

Social class demarcates sociocultural environments differing in the relative abundance and scarcity of resources, which in turn differentially afford independent and interdependent psychological processes. The relationships between social class and psychological processes are well documented in Western populations but less so elsewhere. Examining such a relationship is particularly important in China, with its unique historical and sociocultural issues surrounding social class. This research examined the relationship between social class and independence-interdependence among Chinese adolescents (N=1184). Findings were consistent across a diverse array of psychological processes implicated by independence-interdependence: Participants with well-educated parents experienced more socially disengaging emotions and a higher level of self-esteem, and were more inclined toward dispositional attribution and focused attention, compared to participants with less well-educated parents. These findings highlight the cross-cultural commonality in the relationship between social class and independence-interdependence. La classe sociale delimite des environnements socioculturels qui different en termes d'abondance relative et de rarete des ressources, ce qui, a son tour, fournit des processus psychologiques independants et interdependants de maniere differentielle. Les relations entre la classe sociale et les processus psychologiques sont bien documentees pour les populations occidentales, mais elles le sont moins ailleurs. L'etude de ces relations est particulierement importante en Chine etant donne les questions historiques et socioculturelles particulieres qui y ont cours a propos de la classe sociale. Notre recherche porte sur la relation entre la classe sociale et la question de l'independance-interdependance chez les adolescents chinois (n=1,184). Les resultats sont constants pour un ensemble divers de processus psychologiques impliques par la variable de l'independance-interdependance: les participants ayant des parents bien instruits ont eprouve des emotions plus socialement degagees et un niveau d'estime de soi plus eleve et ils etaient plus portes a faire des attributions en termes de dispositions et a avoir une attention plus concentree comparativement aux participants ayant des parents moins instruits. Ces resultats illustrent les points communs interculturels dans les relations entre la classe sociale et la variable de l'independance-interdependance. La clase social delimita entornos socioculturales diversos respecto de la abundancia o escasez de recursos, lo cual a su vez proporciona procesos psicologicos diferentes de independencia e interdependencia. Las relaciones entre clase social y procesos psicologicos estan bien documentadas en poblaciones occidentales, pero no tanto en otros lugares. Examinar tal relacion es particularmente importante en China, debido a sus problematicas historicas y socioculturales particulares respecto de la clase social. En este estudio se examino la relacion entre clase social e independencia-interdependencia en los adolescentes chinos (N=1,184). Los hallazgos fueron consistentes a traves de los diversos procesos psicologicos implicados por la independencia-interdependencia: los participantes que tenian padres con una buena educacion experimentaron emociones mas desapegadas socialmente hablando y una autoestima mas elevada, y tuvieron una mayor tendencia hacia la atribucion disposicional y atencion focalizada, en comparacion con los participantes que tenian padres con menos educacion. Estos hallazgos resaltan los aspectos comunes a las culturas en la relacion entre clase social e independencia-interdependencia.
