A realistically sized magnetically geared lead screw is designed, analyzed, and experimentally tested in this paper. By using magnetic gearing, this device is able to convert low-speed linear motion into high-speed rotary motion. The advantage of the proposed design over alternative linear magnetic gear and magnetic lead screw devices is that the translator does not contain magnets. Therefore, in long stroke length applications, the magnetically geared lead screw can operate with a higher force-per-kilogram of magnet material.
