Rap music therapy is a music therapy approach that emphases the musical elements of rap music, such as its specific rhythm, dynamics, and expression. The treatment goals are related to behavioral change, anger management, stress regulation, as well as improving healthy self-esteem, self-confidence, and expression of emotion. This article aims to provide a step-by-step approach that encourages the non-rap artists among music therapists to apply rap music in work with their clients. The approach is described within the context of forensic psychiatry, but is useful for other clients for whom hip-hop and rap comprise an important part of their musical interests.
