This paper presents the latest progress in development and applications of the capacitive touch systems (CTSs) with styli. The CTSs, which include the touch sensor, analog frontend (AFE) integrated circuit (IC), and micro-controller unit, are reviewed along with the passive and active styli. The architecture of the CTS is explained first, followed by an exploration of the touch sensors: (1) types of touch sensors, such as in-cell, on-cell, and add-on types according to the size and material, (2) AFE IC with the driving and sensing methods, and (3) passive and active styli for the CTS. Finally, the future perspectives of the CTS are given from the viewpoint of the technical developments.
