This review article presents an overview of the development of the numerical wave modelling techniques that are used. Due to the advent of powerful computers and development of several numerical techniques, solving coastal problems using numerical models are found to be very reliable, cost effective and time saving tools. Numerical models are used to hindcast and forecast wave parameters which help in the design of the coastal structures. Thus proper determination of the wave parameters invites lot of interest. In this review article, development of numerical models, uses and steps taken to improve the accuracy of the numerical models is discussed. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
