A mild and efficient photocatalytic protocol for the synthesis of the phenanthrene scaffold has been devised. The reaction involves intramolecular cyclization of -keto vinyl radicals generated from -bromochalcones under visible light photoredox catalyzed (VLPC) conditions. The high product yields, wide substrate scope, and complete regioselectivity are notable attributes of the reaction.
