Building occupancy is of great importance for energy efficient control of buildings. A large number of works have been developed for the estimation and detection of building occupancy. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review on building occupancy estimation and detection. The estimation and detection systems are divided into different categories based on the involved sensors. Since the fusion of multiple sensors is widely adopted for building occupancy estimation and detection, a review on the systems based on different combination of sensors is also performed. Then, we conduct a comparison of different sensor types for the estimation and detection of occupancy. Finally, some potential future research directions are indicated based on current progresses of the systems. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
