Novel high-brightness and thermal-stable Ca3Gd(AlO)3(BO3)4:Eu3+ red phosphors with high colour purity for NUV-pumped white LEDs

Novel high-brightness Ca3Gd(AlO)(3)(BO3)(4):Eu3+ red phosphors were successfully fabricated by the solid-state reaction method for the first time and their photoluminescence properties were investigated. The Ca3Gd(AlO)(3)(B-3)(4):Eu3+ phosphors showed intense red emissions under 397 nm excitation. The optimal doping concentration of Eu3+ ions in the Ca3Gd(AlO)(3)(B-3)(4) reached as high as 50 mol%, and the corresponding internal quantum efficiency was measured to be 90%. The CIE chromaticity coordinate [(0.654, 0.343)] of Ca3Gd(AlO)(3)(B-3)(4):0.5Eu(3+) sample was very close to the ideal red light [(0.670, 0.330)]. Meanwhile, the colour purity of Ca3Gd(AlO)(3)(B-3)(4):0.5Eu(3+) was calculated to be 94%. These phosphors also possessed good thermal stability at high temperature, and the emission intensity at 423 K was about 84% of that at 303 K. The fabricated prototype LED device with BaMgAl10O7:Eu2+ blue phosphors, (Ba,Sr)(2)SiO4:Eu2+ green phosphors, Ca3Gd0.(5)(AlO)(3)(B-3)(4):0.5Eu(3+) red phosphors and 395 nm-emitting InGaN chip exhibited bright white light. The current study presents that Ca3Gd0.5(AlO)(3)(B-3)(4):0.5Eu(3+) can be used as a red phosphor for white LEDs.
