An efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst composed of Au nanoparticle supported on TiO2 (anatase) is prepared by sol-gel method. This prepared nanocomposite showed good catalytic activity in the oxidation of various alcohols to aldehyde and ketone under irradiation of visible light. Various spectroscopic techniques including UV-Visible absorption spectral studies and photoluminescence study are employed to characterize the catalyst. It was also characterized by XRD, TEM, BET, XPS and ICP-AES analysis. In contrast to air and H2O2, use of TBHP as oxidant gave good yield. The reaction conditions with respect to solvent and amount of catalyst are optimized. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
