A monocyclic temple synthetic lectin, with extended electron-rich aromatic surfaces, shows enhanced affinities for carbohydrates in water. The methoxy substituents favour binding to -linked maltodextrins, against the all-equatorial substrates normally favoured by this family of receptors.
