Quiz-based educational material represents a useful tool for teachers that want to reinforce and test the knowledge of their students. Moreover, a wide variety of contents is suitable to be transformed into quiz questions and delivered through mobile or computer applications. However, there is a lack of understanding regarding the effects of question type, usage of images and text length that hinder the creation of more effective quizzes. For this study, we designed and developed BioQuiz, an application that runs in desktop computers and mobile phones. Four sets of questions related to the respiratory and digestive systems were created from the curriculum for Secondary Education in Biology. A user study involving 60 students from Secondary Education was conducted in order to obtain information about the effect of question types, use of images and length of the questions.
