We show how the BRST identities can be used to control the renormalization of the background gauge in QCD, in spite of the fact that certain one-particle reducible graphs have to be omitted in general. We obtain the all order renormalized effective action for the background field theory. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Inc.
