Urban areas management includes the planning of efficient strategies and measures for ensuring good standards of environmental quality in urban areas. The main aim of this paper is to disclose some useful techniques and strategies for improving urban ecological sustainability, satisfying the main principles of conservation tacking into account social and economic feasibilities. Urban ecological sustainability has been considered using an interdisciplinary approach which aims to integrate social aspects, green architecture designs and traditional ecological issues. Before analysing green areas management and bioengineering for improving ecological sustainability of urban areas, the first part of the paper includes an overview of related themes, such as an analysis of the main interactions between ecological sustainability and energy supply in urban areas, social and economic aspects, interactions between urbanisation and biodiversity conservation. The results pinpoint strategies and techniques for improving urban ecological sustainability mainly considering environmental public awareness and green areas management and focusing on Southern Europe contexts but replicable and adaptable in different circumstances.
