Substrate-Independent Light Confinement in Butterfly-Inspired Photonic Crystal Slabs

Using the scale structure of the Dione juno butterfly wing as an inspiration, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a class of low-index surface structures that supports resonances without index contrast with the substrate; these resonances are substrate-independent.
