gamma-Butyrolactone (gamma-BL) derivatives are reviewed from the point of view of their ability to form polymers by ring-opening polymerization. The thermodynamic limitations for polymerization of gamma-BL are discussed. Polymerizability of naturally available unsaturated and synthetic functional gamma-BL derivatives enabling postfunctionalization of final polyesters is presented. Homopolymerization of gamma-BL derivatives with significant effect of the substituent on the gamma-BL ring strain is shown.
