Hydrophobic modified alginate (HM-alginate) has been synthesized by derivatization of sodium alginate (SA) with dodecyl glycidyl ether (DGE) in an aqueous solution. Using orthogonal optimization methods, the optimum combined parameters were explored as follows: 75 degrees C, 70mL H2O, 0.20mmol sodium dodecyl sulfate and 2.0mL DGE (mole ratio of SA to DGE, 2.2:1), the maximum yield was 112.62%. Their micellar properties and rheological properties were investigated, respectively. In addition, their drug delivery behaviors were evaluated with Sudan IV as a hydrophobic model drug.
