An aggregation induced emission (AIE) based bioimaging probe, TPE-Gal, was designed for light-up imaging of beta-galactosidase in living cells. The applicability of TPE-Gal in imaging endogenous beta-galactosidase activity was confirmed in OVCAR-3 cells.
