meso-Tetraalkylporphycenes were synthesized in a few steps using intramolecular oxidative coupling of the Z-isomer of 5,6dialkyldipyrroethenes. The use of a hypervalent iodine(III) reagent, namely phenyliodine(III) bis(trifluoroacetate), is essential for performing these reactions.
