A carbon nanosphere supported Ru (Ru-CNS) effectively catalyzed the conversion of biorenewable platform chemicals to 5-aminoleulininc acid (ALA), furan alcohols and gamma-valerolactone (GVL). The catalyst exhibits high activity for the investigated processes, enabling 76% ALA and > 90% furan alcohols and GVL from their precursors. The effect of solvent polarity on the yield and selectivity of GVL and its ring-opening product has been studied with detailed characterization of the catalyst.
