In this study, a kind of aminated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (PPEK-NH(2)s) with amino groups on side chains were synthesized by the condensation polymerization of 4-(4-Hydroxylphenyl)(2H)-phthalazin-1-one (DHPZ), 4,4-difluoro benzophenone (DFK), and the third active monomer (4-Amino)phenylhydroquinone (4-AmPHQ). Then, PPEK-NH(2)s were employed as compatibilizers to enhance the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced copoly(phthalazinone ether sulfone)s (PPBES) composites. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis profiles indicate that PPEK-NH(2)s exhibit more impressive thermal behaviors than PPBES. CF/PPBES composites with 5 wt% compatibilizers based on PPBES were fabricated by solution impregnation and compression molding. The as-made CF/PPBES/PPEK-NH2 (4) demonstrates the highest interlaminar shear strength and flexural strength with increasement of 12.7% and 16.8%, respectively. Meanwhile, this composite exhibits excellence in hydrothermal aging tests. Moreover, the strengthening mechanisms of CF/PPBES composites with PPEK-NH(2)s could be attributed to both chemical and physical interaction between the matrix and CFs owing to amino groups. Therefore, these compatibilizers offer new insights for fabricating high-performance advanced thermoplastic composites. POLYM. COMPOS., 39:4139-4147, 2018. (c) 2017 Society of Plastics Engineers
