The prediction of fatigue crack growth is a major concern in the design of mechanical components and engineering structures subjected to cyclic loading. One of the best-known numerical approaches is the adaptive remeshing technique based on the finite element method. This paper aims to provide an overview of adaptive remeshing technique proposals developed to evaluate the crack shape evolution and fatigue life. In addition, a systematic identification of the main numerical variables affecting the accuracy of the above-mentioned technique is provided. The effects of the main physical variables on fatigue crack paths are discussed in the last part of the paper. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
