In this work, we analyzed possible measures to improve material efficiency of the personal computer product group, to support the ongoing review of the Ecodesign Regulation. Our analysis aims to support policy actions by applying the principles of the circular economy, thus by improving (a) resource saving and waste prevention, (b) repair and reuse, and (c) the design for recycling. We propose a series of actions to reduce the need for raw materials and to increase the quality and quantity of materials recoverable at the end of life. While former studies relied on Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Cost indicators, this assessment was developed considering the material flows. We present (1) the potential raw material savings thanks to increased battery durability and to documented design for disassembly, and (2) the potential additional flow of secondary raw materials thanks to labelling/marking of components to facilitate computer dismantling and sorting.
