This paper discusses an innovative approach on how to tune wireless power transfer systems with the objective of focusing the magnetic fields, reducing back-beam and side-beam to extend the forward transmission range. The approach uses a conical transmitter with a tuning plunger. The design analysis of a tuned wireless power transfer system using a conical coil transmitter and a tuning plunger coil are given. Three architectures are given with analysis of their design. They are implemented. Experiments were conducted to validate the designs by testing the forward, side and back-beam efficiencies. Output power transfer efficiency up to 90% is achieved with the design. The back-beam efficiency has been significantly reduced to around 50% only and the side beam to around 30% at equal distances with the front beam.
