Compact Circularly-Polarized SIW Edge-Radiating Antenna for Beamsteering in 5G Mobile Devices

This paper presents a compact circularly-polarized substrate integrated waveguide antenna for the use in a beamsteering array in 5th generation mobile devices. The circular polarization is achieved through a compact notched-septum polarizer which is optimized for SIWs. Radiation is achieved through a dielectric lens with the addition of via extensions on either side for smaller beamwidth in azimuth and higher gain. A bandwidth of 700 MHz from 27.4 GHz to 28.1 GHz is achieved with worst case HPBWs of 70 degrees in elevation and 60 degrees in azimuth and again of 6.2 dB to 6.6 dB. Axial ratios of better than 3 dB are achieved in both planes.
