Simulating High-Frequency Generation Profiles for Large Solar PV Portfolios

Electric utility system modelers and operators need methods for simulating realistic, high-frequency generation profiles that represent large solar photovoltaic (PV) portfolios. We have developed a method for doing this that takes measured irradiance and temperature from a network of ground stations, applies smoothing using the Wavelet Variability Model, and calculates power output. We then compare the results with actual 250 MW and 880 MW generation profiles from the Southeast US.
