A stretchable and conformable alternating current electroluminescent device having a recordmaximumluminance of 450 cd m(-2) is fabricated. When stretched, the luminance of the device monotonously reduces but still retains as high as 100 cd m(-2) luminance at 500% strain. The device performance is stable in terms of mechanical robustness, cycling stretching stability, and long term stability. The high performance is achieved by using a new dielectric matrix (poly(styrene(144)-b-butyl acrylate(938)-b-styrene(144))) for ZnS: Cu particles and a new solvent-free ionic conductor of the diblock copolymer of (ethylene glycol)(9) methyl ether acrylate and n-butyl acrylate as transparent electrodes.
